Sophia Koukouraki (M.D, PhD) is Professor of Nuclear Medicine at the University of Crete Medical School and Director of the Department of Nuclear Medicine (Imaging and Therapeutic Unit) at the University Hospital of Heraklion, Crete. She studied at the Medical School of the Sapienza University of Rome and graduated with a grade of 102/110 (1991).
She specialized in Nuclear Medicine at the “Evangelismos” Hospital and the University Hospital of Heraklion. She completed her PhD in Nuclear Oncology (Faculty of Medicine, University of Crete, 2001). She further her education in PET techniques as a guest scientist at the German Oncology Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, Germany (2005-2006).
Her clinical experience as a Nuclear Medicine Specialist began as Supervisor of Nuclear Medicine at the University Hospital of Heraklion (1997-2008), Associate Professor (2008-2012), Permanent Associate Professor (2012-2015), Associate Lecturer of Nuclear Medicine (2015-2020) and continued as Professor of Nuclear Medicine (2020-present).
She was a member of the Quality Control Committee, of the High Cost Drugs Committee, a member of the Board of Directors of the University Hospital of Heraklion, a member of the working group of the Central Board of Health (KESY) for the medical specialty of Nuclear Medicine, a member of the Committees of the Medical Faculty of the University of Crete (Undergraduate Studies Committee, Committee for International Exchanges, Committee of the Internal Evaluation Group (ΟΜΕΑ), Secretary General of Nuclear Medicine (2018-present), member of UEMS for the specialty of Nuclear Medicine, member of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM), member of the EANM Oncology & Theranostics Committee Group, and Director of the Laboratory Department of the University Hospital of Heraklion (2022).
She has been published extensively (foreign-language publications, contribution of chapters in foreign-language journals, participation in research protocols), and has had multi-year teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Finally, she has organized and delivered lectures in both Greek and international conferences.
