The NEST Collective, Return to Sender
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) and the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (EMST) are pleased to present the major outdoor installation Return to Sender by the Nairobi-based NEST Collective, curated by Katerina Gregos.
The NEST Collective are presenting the first iteration of their major installation Return to Sender since Documenta 15 in Kassel (2022), for which it was specially commissioned, at the SNFCC in Athens. The work consists of a custom-built pavilion made of bales of used clothing—called mitumba in Swahili—the majority of which ends up in landfills in Africa, constituting a major environmental problem. The installation is made of textiles and clothes collected from Greece and intended for recycling or reuse in industry, where they will end up after the exhibition.
The installation will be on display on the SNFCC Esplanade from SNF Nostos 2023 until September 30, 2023, with free admission for the public.
Installation of Return to Sender at the SNFCC is made possible through a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), which will also support a number of educational and creative activities for all ages accompanying the project throughout its stay at the SNFCC.
